The Moreton Bay Region is in the middle of a significant period of growth.
City of Moreton Bay forecasts the region’s population will increase from about 480,000 to approximately 690,000 by 2041. Council’s long-term planning provides for an additional 88,300 dwellings over the same period.
Brisbane 2032 will arrive while that growth is well underway.
The new Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre at Moreton Bay Central will be one of the region’s most prominent Games projects. Around Burpengary, investment in transport, sewerage, roads, recreation and emergency services reflects the everyday demands of a growing population.
For people considering making the Moreton Bay Region home, both parts of that story matter: the major projects attracting attention ahead of 2032 and the infrastructure being delivered closer to where people live.
Growth in the Moreton Bay Region predates Brisbane 2032
The City of Moreton Bay has been planning for substantial population growth for years.
Council’s Growth Management Strategy provides a roadmap for managing that growth, including land use, planned infrastructure and housing diversity.
Some infrastructure is being delivered for Brisbane 2032. Other projects respond to growth that would need managing regardless of the Games.
Brisbane 2032 infrastructure at Moreton Bay Central
The planned Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre will be a major part of Moreton Bay’s Brisbane 2032 program.
Populous was appointed principal architect in March 2026. Current plans provide for 12 multi-use courts and capacity for up to 10,000 spectators during the Games, with the venue designed to support sporting and community use beyond 2032.
Investment around the venue is already delivering public space at Moreton Bay Central.
A three-kilometre lakefront walking circuit opened in June 2026, together with picnic shelters and landscaped green space beside the future sports centre. City of Moreton Bay describes the $6 million project as legacy infrastructure intended for community use well before the Games.
Council’s 2026–27 program also includes planning for a new boulevard between Petrie Station and the sports centre.
The precinct also has a broader regional connection. Current Translink timetables put Burpengary and Petrie about 12 to 13 minutes apart by train, with both stations on the same rail corridor.
For communities further north, including Burpengary, the sports centre forms part of a growing regional network rather than an amenity on the doorstep.
Infrastructure supporting growth in Burpengary
Around Burpengary, many of the projects supporting growth are less visible than a new sporting venue.
The Adsett Road Sewage Pumping Station is one example. Supported through the Queensland Government’s Residential Activation Fund, the project is intended to unlock land for more than 1,000 residential lots across Burpengary and Morayfield South.
City of Moreton Bay’s 2026–27 budget includes an upgrade to the intersection of Burpengary, Station, Henderson and Rowley roads, renewal of fields at Burpengary Sports Complex and new or renewed pathways in the surrounding area.
Queensland Rail completed a major accessibility upgrade of Burpengary station, including a footbridge with lift access, raised platforms, upgraded lighting and security, new passenger facilities and a park-and-ride with almost 500 spaces. The upgraded station reopened in September 2024.
The $8.45 million Morayfield Ambulance Station also opened in June 2024. The purpose-built facility accommodates 22 frontline staff and was developed to support the growing Moreton Bay community.
How Sage fits into Burpengary’s growth
Cedar Woods’ Sage community at Burpengary sits within this wider period of change.
Positioned between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, Sage has access to the Bruce Highway and is close to Burpengary train station, with schools, shopping, healthcare and recreation also available throughout the surrounding area.
The masterplan has been shaped around the relationship between homes, open space and the existing landscape. Following an expansion of the project, Sage is now planned to deliver more than 440 residential homesites over its lifespan.
Open space remains a significant part of that masterplan, including more than nine hectares of environmental corridor.
Sage Community Park serves as a focal point within the neighbourhood. Established trees have been retained alongside open lawns, shaded areas, nature-based play and facilities for basketball, netball and cricket. Walking connections through the community are intended to link homes with the park, bushland and future precincts.
Cedar Woods Senior Development Manager Hannah Blue said the intention was to create something residents could use every day.
“We didn’t just want to deliver the basics. It was about creating space to move, unwind and connect.”
What the Moreton Bay Region could look like after 2032
Brisbane 2032 will bring international attention to South-East Queensland, but growth in the Moreton Bay Region extends well beyond the Games.
By then, some of today’s major projects will simply be part of the region’s infrastructure: the Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre, new public spaces and connections at Moreton Bay Central, upgraded local roads, improved transport facilities and essential services supporting additional housing.
The Games provide a deadline and a catalyst for some of that investment. Population growth is driving much of the rest.
City of Moreton Bay is planning for about 210,000 additional residents by 2041. For communities such as Sage, the longer-term story is how transport, essential services, open space and housing develop alongside that growth.
