An innovative bush tucker program that helps people recognise and cook with traditional Noongar foods is one of eight community programs across the Perth metropolitan area to share in $25,000, thanks to Cedar Woods’ Neighbourhood Grants program.
The initiative provides support and funding to a range of grassroots community organisations and groups across Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria with more than $500,000 invested since the program started in 2009.
Cedar Woods WA State Manager Ben Rosser said the Neighbourhood Grants program offered support to a diverse set of community groups in or around Cedar Woods estates.
“The benefits we see from these grants are widespread and ongoing, and that’s why we are delighted to once again offer this support to our communities,” Mr Rosser said.
“This year the grants have supported causes ranging from educational Noongar cultural programs in schools to equipment for a local country choir and support for men’s mental health.”
The year’s Neighbourhood Grants recipients provide services to six Cedar Woods communities and surrounding areas:
The Rivergums (Baldivis, south of Perth)
- Baldivis Secondary College P&C received a grant to establish a Bush Tucker Foods program that engages residents of The Rivergums and Baldivis in understanding and appreciating Noongar culture through the creation and celebration of food. This program will include Tucker Bush Plant school garden, Bindi Bindi Dreaming workshops and educational learning resources for the school and community.
- Baldivis Events received a grant which they will use towards their free monthly events for the Baldivis community.
Byford on the Scarp and The Brook at Byford (Byford, south-east of Perth)
- Serpentine Jarrahdale Men’s Shed received a grant to help them support and promote men’s health and mental wellbeing.
- Heritage Country Choir received a grant to purchase equipment to use for their events and concerts.
- Riding for the Disabled Oakford received a grant to assist with buying a new horse for their program.
Ariella Private Estate (Brabham, north-east of Perth)
- Vibrant Gujarat Sports Club received a grant to purchase new sporting equipment and uniform.
Bushmead (Hazelmere, east of Perth)
- High Wycombe Junior Football Club received a grant for new equipment for the club’s girls’ teams.
Millars Landing (Baldivis, south of Perth)
- Bridging The Gap received a grant for new uniforms for staff who provide mentoring and pre-employment training services to people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
