To help get you started, here are our top four tips for using native flora in your interior design.
1. Mix up height, texture, and tone
A great way to add visual interest to your home is grouping different plants in one space.
When picking your indoor plants, look for options with different leaf styles and patterns to add dimension. You can also use plant stands, hangers, or multi-level holders to add height. We recommend using an odd number of flora, which is scientifically more effective at capturing a person’s gaze!
Some great plants include string of nickels, Tasmanian blue gum, radiator plant, dragon tail plant and wax flower.
Consider a cluster of pots to create interest. This can look great in the corner of a room or as an inviting entry to your home.
2. Create a native flower arrangement
If looking after plants seems overwhelming, try incorporating native flora into your home through a native flower arrangement – be it dried or fresh.
You can choose to display the same type of flower or a selection of different varieties in a vase that looks fabulous on coffee tables, entryway tables or even the kitchen bench. Using dried flowers also means they are low maintenance and do not require water or light.
Our favourite flora for inside the house are eucalyptus, strawflower, billy button, banksia and kangaroo paw.
This trend has become increasingly popular of late and bouquets can be found ready made at many Brisbane florists including Stalks & Stems, Bare Bouquets, and Wallflower.
3. Use a statement plant
Every room has its centrepiece, so why not make yours a statement plant?
The key when picking your statement plant is to find one that is large enough to stand out in the space. Place it in a focal point, like the corner of a room, and keep the decor that surrounds it minimal.
Our favourite statement plants include kentia, native monstera and cunjevoi lily.
4. Match your pot to its surrounds
If you're into design, the chances are you already have an interior style be it boho-chic, farmhouse or Modern Australian. When looking to introduce native flora into this space, ensure it looks cohesive by finding a pot or vase that enhances your style, with a texture, colour and shape that reflects your home’s interior.
To future proof your design choice, consider a pot that is large enough for your natives to continue to grow and flourish in the space. In turn, these larger pots will only add to the visual impact of this statement centrepiece.
