We’ve put together a list of businesses we love, to help you shop local and support those who live and work in our area. The Olive Branch Bromeliad Nursery

232 Canvey Road, Upper Kedron

This special spot is a true family legacy. Started by Olive and Len Trevor more than 50 years ago, The Olive Branch Bromeliad Nursery is today owned and operated by their granddaughter, Bek Trevor. Lovers of bromeliads will be in true paradise, with the six-acre wholesale nursery growing thousands of plants, including those specially imported from all over the world. The nursery supplies landscapers, wholesalers and retail nurseries and is open to the public from 9am-3pm weekdays.

 

D-SOL Cafe

16 Ferny Way, Ferny Hills

Owner Chris opened D-SOL Café in 2016 as a way of sharing his love for specialty coffee, quality food and good banter. You’ll find breakfast and lunch favourites like smashed avo, eggs benny, pulled pork burger and buddha bowl served from 6am-2pm on weekdays and 7am-2pm on the weekend. For those looking to make the perfect brew from home, D-SOL also stocks beans and brewing equipment, and hosts barista workshops, so you can learn to dose grind, tamp and steam like a pro.

 

Ferny’s Café and Espresso Bar

23/51 McGinn Road, Ferny Grove

Locals Hayley and Jaimi are the forces behind this buzzing café, which caters for members of the whole family. The littlest in the brood will love the kiddie corner, while the outdoor seating and quick-stop service make a caffeine refuel (or long brunch) with your fur baby easy. Locally roasted Elixir Coffee is complemented with an all-day breakfast and lunch menu boasting drool-worthy dishes including the big brekkie, four varieties of benny, the keto klassic, gourmet burgers and fresh salads. Stop by between 5.30am-2pm on weekdays and 6am-1.30pm on weekends.

 

ION Cafe

5 Irvine Street, Mitchelton

This charming Queenslander workers’ cottage has evolved into a family-owned café with an ‘our house is your house’ vibe. Adorning the walls are quirky artworks, family-stitched pieces going back up to three decades and road trip memorabilia. Kookaburras, possums, and water dragons are frequent visitors to the back deck, drawn by the magnificent jacaranda. Coffee lovers can sip the Ultimo Blend from Brisbane roasters, Belissimo Coffee, or buy a bag to enjoy at home. Open from 7am-2pm for breakfast and lunch, you’ll find all the morning classics, along with fish, calamari, burgers, wraps and a kids’ menu that’s sure to please the little ones.

Chef Kristin Caldera is the face behind the stunning custom Caldera Caking creations. With a love of making and decorating buttercream cakes, cupcakes and brownies, she turns her gourmet treats into true visual delights. Kristin says she wakes up and goes to bed thinking about her delectable delights, which are freshly made to order and baked in her Council-registered kitchen. You’ll find these beauties at birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, christenings and more across the city’s northern suburbs.

 

Kayla’s Cupcakes

Creator Kayla says nothing gives her more joy than seeing her customers’ faces when they collect one of the cakes, cupcakes or sweet desserts that have come fresh from the Kayla’s Cupcakes kitchen. With a focus on high-quality ingredients, including real vanilla and free-range eggs, there’s a range of treats ideal for all special occasions. Describing herself as a muditation facilitator and creator, Alison Skate took her first pottery class nearly 20 years ago. Today, her hobby has turned into an obsession that she shares through classes, short workshops and the sale of her pieces. Taya Kitchen Culinary School

Qualified chef Taya Meeikeaw opened Taya Kitchen Culinary School in 2016 to share her Asian cooking and passion for food with adults and children. She has plenty of experience, having studied at prominent Wandee Culinary Arts School in Bangkok and cooked in Thailand, Melbourne and Brisbane’s My Thai Restaurant and My Thai Kitchen. She’s also no stranger to the spotlight, having shared her knowledge at food festivals, including Brisbane’s Thai Festival Southbank and Brisbane’s Fine Foods Festival.
