We’ve put together our top five things to do here in Ellendale and surrounding areas — so consider this your guide to a jam-packed weekend (or three)!
Pack a picnic and park-hop
Create memories right here in Ellendale Upper Kedron and kick off your day of adventure in our locally-renowned, state-of-the-art playground. With an eight-metre tall, three-level play tower, two massive slides, and a four-person see-saw, our park's sure to keep kids entertained. The shade sails help keep the kids cool, plus there are BBQ facilities and sheltered tables for all your alfresco eats.
Still have energy to burn? Nine minutes away is Bob Cassimaty Park in Ferny Grove. There is something for everyone at this parkland, from an extensive Netplex playground to a skate park and a fully-fenced ball games area. Be sure to bring your basketball to shoot some hoops!
Top it all off with a stop at George Willmore Playground in Ferny Hills. Young kids will get a real kick out of the pedal-powered spinners and climbing frame, while parents will appreciate a little sit down on the lush grassy areas to soak in the afternoon sun.
Connect to nature in Walkabout Creek
On the edge of D’Aguilar National Park, you’ll find the scenic Walkabout Creek, complete with its own Discovery Centre. Say hello to our area’s native creatures during one of the Wildlife Centre’s feeding sessions or discovery shows. Or grab a map from the information centre and head off on your own fauna-finding bushwalk (we recommend trying the waterside five kilometre Araucaria track).
Walkabout Creek features the Enoggera Reservoir — Brisbane’s largest natural swimming pool — so don’t forget to pack your swimming gear. Water lovers can bring their canoe or kayak to explore; there is also a hire stand nearby.
One thing’s for sure — you’ll certainly work up an appetite! Hit the Walkabout Creek Cafe and indulge in their delicious menu on the picturesque deck. You can also request a picnic pack to enjoy throughout the grounds (place your order two days prior).
Waterplay all-day
Ferny Grove’s FREE Aqua Park is a short five-minute drive from Ellendale Upper Kedron, providing water-play elements like a giant water bucket, spray tunnel and water cannons to help cool the family on a hot summer day.
The accessible design includes lots of ground-level play elements and an interactive water table that’s suitable for wheelchair access. Plenty of shaded areas and BBQ facilities mean you can truly set up camp for the day.
If swimming laps is more your idea of fun, the nearby Ferny Hills Swimming Pool has a 50-metre outdoor heated lap swimming pool, a 15-metre indoor pool and a free-form toddler play pool for a splash-tastic time. Adult casual entry costs $5.50.
Bond over barefoot bowls
Call the whole crew together for a round of barefoot bowls at the Ferny Grove Bowls, Sports & Community Club. Book ahead for a two-hour session hire, including coloured bowls, jacks and mats, from just $6 per person.
It’s an ideal sport for all-ages fun. And, if you’re feeling peckish after dominating the competition on the green, The Little Nyonya Kitchen are serving up authentic Malaysian Cuisine most weeknights and all weekend.
Experience the country charm of Samford Village
It may only be a 15-minute drive from Ellendale Upper Kedron, but the unique appeal and natural beauty of Samford Village will have you feeling a world away. Spend a day lost in this charming township — picking through produce and handmade gifts at the Samford Valley Markets, crawling local cafes for the perfect cup and tasting from inventive menus, or even living an authentic Harry Potter experience at the one-of-a-kind Store of Requirement.
Active locals can explore the Samford Village and Samford Valley regions by bicycle, with an 8.3km rail trail tracking from Ferny Grove Railway Station and towards Samford Valley along Lanita Road. Cycle or walk and enjoy the rolling views across the D’Aguilar Range and Samford Valley. Less experienced cyclists can stick to shorter sections of the trail, like the 1.8 kilometre car-free track through Samford Forest, which runs from Lanita Road to McLean Road South. Whichever route you take, make sure you allow for a pit stop for lunch or even a cheeky beverage from the Samford Valley Hotel.
