Flourish $10K Grant Supports Young Cadets and Sporty Seniors

At Flourish, community is more than a masterplan, it’s something that continues to grow long after the first homes are built. That’s exactly what the latest round of the Flourish Community Grants is all about: supporting the people and local groups who help South Maclean and the wider Logan region thrive.

Now in its second year, the initiative has again awarded $10,000 to four grassroots organisations, each playing a meaningful role in bringing people together and strengthening local connections.

Supporting connection, health and everyday moments

This year’s recipients highlight the diversity of community life across the region, from active lifestyles to youth development and essential support services.

The Greenbank Over-50s Walking Football Club received $3,000 to upgrade well-used equipment, helping the club continue to grow its membership and maintain regular games.

Club President Chris Malyan said the support will make a real difference.

“With goals, footballs, cones, uniforms and other equipment that gets used up to three times a week over the last seven years, everything is starting to wear out,” Mr Malyan said.

“If we don’t have equipment we can’t play the game, so the Flourish Community grant will go far allowing us to support more players as our club grows, and we’re so grateful to be part of this fantastic initiative.”

Mr Malyan said Walking Football was a modified version of the classic game at a slower pace, with their local club growing in popularity.

“Our club caters to players aged over-50, with local participants ranging from 57-84 years old, and our club has grown from 6 members to 47 in the last seven years.”

“We play up to three times a week for a couple of hours and catch up for coffee or tea nearby afterwards, so it’s a great opportunity to get involved with some gentle exercise and socialise with friends at the same time.”

Investing in the next generation

Supporting young people is another key focus of this year’s program.

The 149 Army Cadet Parent Group was awarded $2,000 to upgrade its BBQ trailer, an essential piece of equipment used for both fundraising and field activities.

President Damien Coultis said the upgrade will directly support cadets as they build skills and confidence.

“Our group is made up of parents supporting their children as Army Cadets, young people who are making a positive difference in the community. We regularly fundraise to help enhance their capabilities.,” Mr Coultis said.

“The local unit relies heavily on our group to fund their activities and equipment, and this grant will allow us to upgrade their trailer which is used not only for fundraising BBQs during their weekly parades, but also as their mobile kitchen when they are on bivouacs in isolated locations.”

“We’re all very proud parents, and every single one of these cadets take part to advance themselves, learn leadership skills and help others in the community,” he said.

“The Cedar Woods grants are amazing, not just for us, but for the other groups they are helping in the area, and we’re grateful for their support.”

Extending care across the community

Two additional organisations were recognised for their broader impact across the Logan region.

Impact Care Services received $3,000 to continue delivering vital mental health and community support programs, including affordable groceries, emergency relief and training pathways.

Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Southeast Wildlife Rescue was awarded $2,000 to repair and upgrade rescue equipment, supporting their work caring for native wildlife and educating the community.

Together, these initiatives reflect a shared commitment to wellbeing, resilience and looking after both people and place.

A community designed to grow

As Flourish continues to evolve into a thriving community of more than 500 homes, initiatives like the Community Grants program play an important role in shaping what it means to live here.
