Incontro Apartments is a contemporary community that brings together timeless architectural design, sustainability, and vibrant living in the sought-after suburb of Subiaco. To gain insight into the creative process and inspiration behind the project, we spoke with the team at DKO Architecture. Here’s what they had to say about the journey of creating Incontro.
Who is DKO and what role did you play in the Incontro project?
DKO is a dynamic design practice specialising in architecture, interiors, and landscape architecture across a range of sectors. Known for collaboration and innovation, our team brought this expertise to Incontro to create a thoughtfully designed development that blends modern living with the needs of the Subiaco community. From the masterplan to the individual apartment interiors, we focused on delivering a harmonious and functional space that celebrates design excellence.
What was the vision behind the design of Incontro?
The vision for Incontro was to create a connected community that integrates seamlessly with Subiaco’s unique character. Drawing inspiration from the site’s industrial heritage, the architecture contrasts light and dark materials, smooth and rough textures, to create a bold aesthetic that stands out while respecting the local context.
The apartments feature two custom interior palettes inspired by native tree species:
- Ghost Gum, offering light, off-white stone and walnut timber for a bright and airy feel.
- Iron Bark, incorporating cool grey stone and oak joinery for a more calming and sophisticated environment.
These designs provide timeless, neutral backdrops for residents to personalise their homes while ensuring a strong connection to outdoor spaces.
How does the design of Incontro reflect Subiaco’s surroundings?
Incontro’s design maximises its inner-suburban location, offering residents proximity to the Perth CBD, train stations, retail hubs, and green spaces. The masterplan balances pedestrian laneways, vehicle networks, and central green spaces, creating a community that feels both connected and serene. By blending townhouses and apartments, Incontro introduces a mix of forms and scales, adding visual interest and enhancing Subiaco’s evolving urban landscape.
What role did sustainability play in the project?
Sustainability was a cornerstone of Incontro’s design. The project incorporates energy-efficient systems, sustainable materials, and green spaces to minimise environmental impact while fostering community engagement. Features such as solar power to communal areas, double-glazed windows, and water-efficient fixtures ensure long-term sustainability and potential cost savings for residents.
Can you highlight any unique architectural features of the apartments?
Incontro Apartments have been designed to create a lasting impression, with thoughtful contrasts in texture and form that offer both visual appeal and functionality. Key features include:
- Seamless indoor-outdoor living to maximise natural light and airflow.
- High-end finishes and thoughtful details throughout.
- Communal spaces such as the garden terrace and multifunctional residents lounge, which foster interaction and a sense of belonging within the community.
What challenges did you face in designing Incontro, and how were they overcome?
Balancing diverse housing typologies—townhouses and apartments—within a cohesive masterplan was a unique challenge. The team addressed this through meticulous planning and collaboration with Cedar Woods, ensuring that each element of the design respected the site’s history while delivering a vibrant, contemporary community. The result is a development that integrates functionality, aesthetics, and connectivity.
What sets Incontro apart from other projects?
Incontro’s ability to honour the site’s industrial past while creating a modern, community-focused environment truly sets it apart. The integration of flexible communal spaces, sustainable design elements, and adaptable apartment layouts reflects a forward-thinking approach to urban living. Incontro is not just a place to live; it’s a place where residents can thrive.
Can you summarise Incontro Apartments in three words?
Timeless. Connected. Inspiring.
