A timeline of Millars Landing's best moments yet

M23S_Millars best moments

It’s time for a little bit of Millars Landing history. When living at Millars Landing, you will share a proud connection to the rich heritage of Baldivis. Read on to discover our best moments yet.

Early beginnings in Baldivis

Millars Landing sits just south of the old Rockingham-Jarrahdale train line that was constructed in 1871 by Millars Timbers and Trading Company. The land was owned by Millars Timbers and Trading Company from 1912 to 1973. We’ve paid tribute to this history with the naming of our estate in north Baldivis.

The tramway Reserve that runs along the entire estate, was created in the early 1920’s as the backbone of a temporary rail network built to enable the development of the Peel Estate by transporting harvested local timbers for use in furniture, building and railway construction out of the region; and the transport of construction and farming materials into the region. The Tramway Reserve stretches from Jandakot in the north (City of Cockburn) and to Karnup in the south (City of Rockingham), providing access to the Group Settlements Scheme Land. Although the Tramway Reserve was created, the rail line itself was never constructed in Baldivis.

The tradition lives on at Millars Landing

The estate has reflected the area’s historical association with trains and timber milling in the Millars Landing Steamrail Adventure Playground. This themed playground has been built as an integral part of the development to celebrate the pioneers who helped settle the area in the late 19th century.

Come and visit the playground to be transported back in time! It’s perfect for kids of all ages. You’ll find a climb-on steam train, robust timber furniture, railway sleepers and steel, all sitting alongside two flying foxes, a giant 12-metre slide, swings and picnic facilities. It’s a great spot for the whole family, with plenty of shady structures, large trees and open spaces surrounding the central play area.

“The two main features of the playground are a tall tower reminiscent of an old steam train water stop tower, and a large train climbing structure with opportunities for imaginative play,” explains Jo Olive, the architect who helped to design it.

The playground also features totem artwork from emerging Western Australian artistsBruno Booth and Betty Richards. Three sets of totems visually depict the past, present and future of Millars Landing. Local children also recently contributed to a time capsule that was buried in the playground on its launch day. This capsule will give future generations of Millars Landing residents a glimpse into life here today.
