Transport can make a real difference to how a location works day-to-day, particularly in Perth’s growing outer suburbs.
Before buying your new home, check how you would get to work, schools, shops and other places you visit regularly. Look at the transport available now and any upgrades planned for the area.
It is also worth checking how practical those connections are for your household. Consider travel times, public transport services, walking and cycling links, and the routes you are likely to use at busy times.
This can help you understand how a location works today and what may change as the surrounding area grows.
Why should homebuyers consider public transport?
Most households regularly travel between home, work, education, shops and other services.
Public transport can provide another option for making those trips, depending on the services available and where you need to travel.
When comparing locations, check what transport infrastructure is already operating, what is under construction and what is still planned. For public transport, look at the services available, how often they run and how easily you can reach the station or stop from home.
What transport factors should you consider when buying a home?
The right transport connections will depend on your household and the trips you make regularly.
Consider:
- proximity to train stations and bus services
- service frequency and operating times
- walking and cycling connections
- road access to work, schools, shops and other regular destinations
- traffic conditions at the times you expect to travel
- parking and park-and-ride options
- planned changes to nearby roads or public transport
It can also be useful to consider pedestrian access and how safely and comfortably you can reach nearby transport services.
Where possible, test the trips yourself rather than relying only on distance or estimated travel times.
What is happening on the Kwinana Freeway?
Main Roads WA describes Kwinana Freeway as one of Perth’s busiest roads, carrying around 100,000 vehicles a day and experiencing congestion during peak periods.
In July 2026, the Australian and Western Australian governments announced a preferred proponent for the $700 million Kwinana Freeway Upgrade between Roe Highway and Safety Bay Road. The two governments are jointly funding the project.
According to Main Roads WA, the project includes a new lane in each direction between Russell Road and Mortimer Road, a new southbound lane between Roe Highway and Berrigan Drive, a new northbound lane between Russell Road and Beeliar Drive, coordinated ramp signals and safety upgrades. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, subject to environmental and heritage approvals.
The Australian and Western Australian governments say the additional lanes are intended to reduce congestion and travel times and improve safety across Perth’s southern suburbs.
Cedar Woods’ Millars Landing community is located in Baldivis, with convenient access to the Kwinana Freeway. The planned upgrade may therefore be relevant to residents who regularly use the freeway to travel to and from the area.
The effect of the upgrade on an individual journey will depend on the route and time of day. Check the latest Main Roads WA project information when comparing locations.
What should homebuyers look for in public transport?
Public transport gives households another option for travelling to work, education and other destinations.
The Yanchep Rail Extension opened in July 2024, delivering 14.5 kilometres of new rail from Butler to Yanchep and new stations at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep.
Cedar Woods’ coastal community Eglinton Village is about 500 metres from Eglinton Station, giving residents access to the Yanchep Line and direct rail connections to Joondalup and Perth CBD.
Because the station is already operating, prospective buyers can check the service and travel times themselves when considering the location.
What else should homebuyers check before choosing a location?
Access to schools, shops, healthcare, recreation and employment, along with the type of home and community that suits your household, is also important to consider.
Drive the routes you expect to use, check current public transport services and see which nearby facilities already exist and which are still planned.
