Fraser Rise powering Victoria's renewable energy future

Melbourne-Renewable-Energy-Hub

A transformative renewable energy project is taking shape near Clara Place in Melbourne's north.

The $1.1 billion Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub is set to be a game-changer for Victoria's renewable energy future.

Backed by a $245 million investment from SEC, a government-owned renewable energy company, the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub is one of the world's largest battery projects, capable of storing an impressive 1.6 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy. To put that into perspective, that's enough to power around 200,000 homes during peak evening consumption.

But the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub is not just about sheer scale – it's also about enhancing grid stability and reliability as Victoria transitions away from aging coal-fired power stations. The hub's powerful inverter technology will play a crucial role in safeguarding the state's power supply, ensuring a smooth and seamless transition to a renewable energy future.

Developed in partnership with Equis Australia, a leading renewable energy and waste infrastructure developer, the MREH is strategically situated near Melton to support the development of new renewable energy projects across Victoria's renewable energy zones. This means that the excess wind and solar energy generated across the grid will have a reliable storage solution, further boosting the state's renewable energy capabilities.

When the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub becomes operational in 2025, the facility will boast a total battery capacity of 600 megawatts (MW), a true testament to the scale and ambition of this project. Construction is already underway, and the project is expected to create more than 155 new jobs, including up to 14 trainee and apprenticeship roles – a welcome boost for the local Fraser Rise economy.

But the benefits of the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub extend far beyond just energy and employment. The project also includes a $4.5 million community benefit fund, which will be used to support local initiatives and ensure that the surrounding community shares in the project's success.

We're excited to see the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub take shape and contribute to the state's transition towards a more sustainable and resilient energy landscape. As our community continues to grow, we're confident that projects like the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub will play a vital role in powering our homes, and the broader region for years to come.
