An extension of the much-loved Steamrail Adventure Park, the wetlands add another dimension to one of Millars Landing’s favourite community spaces. From energetic afternoons in the playground to slower walks surrounded by nature, the expanded area creates even more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and make the most of life’s little moments.
A wetland brought back to life
The Millars Landing wetland is a restored landscape, transforming an area that was previously cleared farmland into an emerging habitat.
At the heart of the wetland you’ll find existing native flora including Swamp Paperbarks and Flooded Gums, complemented by restoration planting designed to strengthen the landscape over time. Sedges and rushes have been planted around the water’s edge to assist with water filtration, while reeds provide habitat structure.
Further out, native shrubs, grasses and trees including Banksias, Marri and Tuart help provide habitat, shade and soil stability. Together, these different layers of vegetation will help the wetland continue to establish and evolve as part of the Millars Landing landscape.
Why wetlands matter
Wetlands have an important role to play within our communities. Beyond creating beautiful green spaces, the planting within the Millars Landing wetland has been designed to support practical environmental functions, from water filtration to providing shelter, feeding areas and habitat structure for wildlife.
The wetland may also provide an emerging habitat for a variety of seasonal and opportunistic waterbirds. Species often associated with the wetlands in the area include Cattle Egrets, Great Egrets, Red-necked Stints, Sharp-tailed Sandpipers and Marsh Sandpipers, with seasonal water, sedges, rushes and trees providing potential feeding, shelter and roosting areas. With the wetlands changing throughout the seasons, each visit may offer something new to discover.

A boardwalk passes through the wetlands, allowing visitors to experience the natural landscape while helping to protect the surrounding environment.
