How Ellendale Sets a New Benchmark for Urban Development

Ellendale, Cedar Woods’ masterplanned community in Upper Kedron, Queensland, is a leading example of how environmentally responsible planning and proactive community engagement can deliver enduring value through enhancing local biodiversity, supporting resident wellbeing, and fostering a strong sense of place. 

Located 12 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD, Ellendale spans 227 hectares and has been carefully designed to integrate modern housing with substantial natural amenity. More than 40% of the site is preserved as green space and recreational corridors - demonstrating Cedar Woods’ long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and community wellbeing. 

Planning for Longevity 

Ellendale’s design is underpinned by comprehensive environmental mapping and a rigorous, long-term rehabilitation strategy. From early stages, the focus has been on enhancing biodiversity and retaining vital ecological functions. This approach has ensured the preservation of significant environmental corridors, supported local fauna—including koalas and squirrel gliders—and guided the delivery of a residential neighbourhood that balances ecological responsibility with commercial viability. 

Recognition Through Results 

To date, Cedar Woods has delivered substantial environmental infrastructure at Ellendale: 189,000 native plantings, over 400 pieces of fauna-support infrastructure (including glider poles, underpasses and nesting boxes), and 91 hectares of rehabilitated space to be dedicated to Brisbane City Council. The development’s leadership in environmental management was recognised with the 2021 National Landscape Architecture Award for Land Management. 

Supporting Community Connection 

Equally important has been the focus on community development. Through initiatives such as the Ellendale Community Grants Program - distributing $95,000 to 57 local groups, and community events like National Tree Day, Cedar Woods is investing in the social fabric of the neighbourhood. Infrastructure including parks, trails and the recently completed bridge connecting Rosella Street and Hasties Avenue supports both connectivity and lifestyle outcomes for residents.
