At Sage, every detail is thoughtfully considered from the tree lined streets to the connection with the preserved bushland that embraces the community. But at the heart of Sage’s values is connection. And there’s no better example of that than the brand-new Sage Community Park, a place where residents can come together and the natural beauty of Burpengary is celebrated every day.
To give us a look behind the scenes of this exciting new space, we sat down with Hannah Blue, Senior Development Manager at Cedar Woods and the passionate driving force behind the park’s design.
Inspired by Family, Built for the Community
As both a seasoned developer and a mum of two young girls, Hannah brought a unique and personal perspective to the park’s design.
“Throughout my career I’ve delivered many parks, and each one has been shaped by the age and stage of my daughters,” she shares. “Right now, they love racing each other, being timed, and challenging themselves, so we included balancing logs and steppers that created obstacle-style features through the garden and play areas to reflect that energy.”
One standout feature, the Sky Carousel, was inspired by a vivid memory of laughter-filled afternoons.
“When they were younger, they were obsessed with spinning. I can still hear the giggles. That joy informed the decision to include the spinner at the entrance of the play zone. It’s one of those things that just makes kids and parents smile.”
Designing with Purpose
Originally, the park's initial design was a 5,000m² space with minimal elements; however, on review the team at Cedar Woods made the decision to go above and beyond, expanding the park to a generous 8,000m² and layering in a suite of meaningful features.
“We wanted to deliver more than just the basics. For us, it was all about the Six S’s—swinging, sliding, spinning, scrambling, sport and shade,” Hannah says. “That meant that the park should not just feature play equipment, but also space to move, unwind, and connect.”
Importantly, sport was seen as a universal language, an activity that could bring together people of all ages and backgrounds. The final design includes space for cricket, netball, basketball and soccer, some of Australia’s most beloved pastimes.
Grounded in Nature
True to the Sage vision, the park isn’t just built within nature, it’s built with nature. From the outset, the existing trees and landscape played a central role in shaping the layout and feel of the space.
“So many parks start out quite bare. But here, we were able to design around the established eucalyptus trees, creating a green, shady sanctuary right from day one,” Hannah explains.
In fact, sustainability was front and centre throughout the development process. Logs and timber salvaged from nearby clearing works were reused as steppers and natural play elements—offering a local, upcycled and low-impact alternative to mass-produced equipment.
“It adds a sense of place and purpose,” she says. “It’s not just a playground; it’s a reflection of the land it sits on.”
Even trees that couldn’t safely remain in place weren’t lost. With input from arborists and the local council, the team chose to ‘habitat prune’ select trees, removing potentially dangerous limbs and adding nesting boxes and hollows to provide safe havens for native wildlife.
A Space for Everyone
Beyond play, the Sage Community Park was thoughtfully designed to offer moments of calm and connection. Nestled among the activity zones are quiet secluded pockets, perfect for picnics, relaxing with a book, walking your dog, or simply enjoying the sounds of the bushland around you.
“That’s what the extra space allowed us to do,” Hannah says. “It gave us the freedom to design areas that support relaxation as well as recreation.”
Looking Ahead
With the construction of Precinct Two on the horizon, the park will play a key role in connecting the two ends of the broader Sage community via walking trails, strengthening its purpose as a central gathering place for all. This connection not only supports a healthy, active lifestyle but also reflects Cedar Woods’ commitment to creating vibrant, connected communities where people feel a sense of belonging.
With the park now officially open, Hannah has enjoyed the moment where she can finally see this vision brought to life, where children race along the steppers and parents enjoy coffee in the shade of the gum trees.
“I truly hope this park becomes the heart of the community, a place where neighbours can meet, friendships are formed, and memories are made,” she says. “That’s the power of thoughtful design in a place like Sage.”
Sage is about creating more than just homes, it’s about nurturing a lifestyle that’s connected, inspired, and surrounded by nature. With the new community park, that vision is now beautifully brought to life.
